Younger of the two brothers (Ted and Charles) who served in WWII, Lance Sergeant Charles William Duffy (Service No:VX35163) initially served in the Militia (1937/1938) with C Coy 8th Battalion before enlisting in the AIF on 28 June 1940 as a Private with 10th Training Battalion - trade group Signaller. Private Duffy served in Darwin NT with 2/14th Field Regiment in 1941, and on 12 November 1943 was a Bombardier attached to 2/14th Field Regiment when he embarked with his Unit from Cairns for Lae on board the Bontekoe. Lance Sergeant Duffy emplaned at Finschafen for Townsville on 25 November 1944, before returning to Jacquinot Bay on 2 January 1945 on board the Taroona. On 20 December 1945 Lance Sergeant Duffy emplaned at Rabaul for Brisbane, and was attached to 2/14 Field Regiment at Discharge on 30 January 1946.
Charles was born in Stawell, Victoria in 1915, youngest of two children of James Alipious Duffy (b1881 in Beechworth, Victoria) and Jane Annie Conroy (nee Osler; b1881 in Dooboobetic, Victoria). James (a Farm Labourer) and Jane (a Widow with two small sons) married in 1910 in Stawell. James was a Labourer when he enlisted in the AIF in 1914 (Private; Service No:662), and was KiA in 1915 at Gallipoli. Jane re married - raising nine of her own children.
Charles worked as a Labourer in Ararat, and in 1938 in Stawell married Gwendoline (Gwen) Jessie McKeon (b1921 in Stawell, Victoria). Following Discharge from the Army, Charles and Gwen settled at Halls Gap via Ararat, where they raised their family and Charles was a Sawmill Worker. In the 1950s the family moved to Prince Town via Port Campbell and then to Portland - Charles was a Patrol Officer. In the mid 1960s Charles and Gwen lived in Warnambool - Charles was a Foreman - before retiring to Norlane in Geelong. Charles died in 1985 and Gwen died in 2004.
