Jim was born in Bunbury, Western Australia in 1915, third of eight children of Eugene William Henry Scott (b1882 in Minninup via Stratham, Western Australia) and Grace Campbell Hill Forrest (b1888 in Bunbury, Western Australia). Eugene and Grace married in Busselton in 1908, and settled at Irwin Farm via Elgin, where they raised their family and Eugene was a Farmer. In 1937, Eugene died from injuries received when a chip from wood he was chopping flew up and penetrated his brain. Grace remained at Irwin Farm.
Jim was a Farm Hand in Elgin when, in 1938 in Capel he married Edna Jean (aka Jean) Hutton (b1916 in Capel. Western Australia). Jim and Jean settled at 'Kyeema' via Elgin, where they raised their family and Jim was a Farmer until his death in 1968. Jean died in 2010.
