The three Davids brothers Edwin, Thomas and Julius fought in the 1st A.I.F. Edwin arrived at Suez on board HMAT Borda on 9 February 1916 to join the 32nd Battalion serving in Egypt. A bout of influenza led to 6 weeks in hospital at Heliopolis in March 1916. His unit went to France on 23 June. Edwin was wounded in the chest, left shoulder and side, and the right arm during action on 22 July at Boulogne and had to be transferred to the 1st Auxiliary Hospital at Southampton, England for treatment. Due to his extensive injuries he was returned to Australia on H.S.Karoola on 16 October and was discharged as medically unfit on 18 April 1917.
