William Henry Bateson was born on the 24th of February 1887 in the small town, Port Hope located in Canada. He had migrated to Australia and lived and grew up in Broken Hill Municipality, New South Wales. Before his enlistment, William Henry had partaken the occupation as a miner. William Henry Bateson had served and belonged to the USA Marines before his service in the World War 1. William was a blue eyed, dark hair single male before the war and did not presume having children at the time. He had the additional features of tattoos. His left arm consisted of the tattoo of the British American flag, as well as on the right an alternative tattoo of a dancing girl and an occurring scar on the back of his neck.
The 29th of August 1914 was the day William Henry Bateson enlisted for the war in South Australia. William became part of the 10th Infantry Battalion. This battalion had started off with basic training in Adelaide until his Battalion embarked 20th October 1914 on Transport Ship A11 Ascanius. He arrived in Egypt where he trained in Mena, which was located near Cairo.
During his service William Henry was promoted to Corporal and then Sergeant.
He returned to Australia after being gassed in 1918 arriving back 2nd December 1918. He was discharged 31sr January 1919.
