Staff Sergeant Frederick Westlake served in the ACMF from 7 May 1941 to 24 August 1944 with 3 Field Regiment. In his Attestation Papers, he stated he had previous military service as Bugler at Blackboy Hill. Older brothers Samuel and Gordon served in WWI, Gordon also served in WWII as did younger brother Francis.
Fred was born in Fremantle, Western Australia in 1897, fourth of six children (sons) of William John Westlake (b1865 in Dunedin, New Zealand) and Annie Jane Harry (b1863 in Cornwall, England). Annie immigrated in 1869, arriving in Melbourne with her parents and siblings on board the Lincolnshire, and William arrived in Melbourne in 1888 on board the Te Anau. William was a Coppersmith and Annie a Dressmaker when they married in Ballarat in 1890, and by 1893 had moved to Western Australia. The family settled in Fremantle, where William joined the WAGR as a Coppersmith. By 1921 William and Annie had moved their family to Caversham in Guildoford - William was a Coppersmith/Foreman with WAGR at Midland Junction.
Fred lived in Guildford, where he was a Tailor and Vigneron. In the early 1950s Fred moved to Rockingham, where he was a Gardener/Farmer until his death in 1964.
