James was the son of James Rafter and Caroline Byrnes who lived at Redcliffe. He attended Humpybong State School and at the time of his enlistment he was employed as a saddler. His enlistment address was Loreto, Redcliffe. James joined the police force and married Henrietta Mary Utschink in 1926.
RAFTER, JAMES.— The Relatives and Friends of James Rafter, of 273 Enoggera Road, Newmarket, beloved Brother of Sister Mary Magdalene (Villa Maria), and Miss Kate Rafter, are invited to attend his Funeral, to leave the Chapel of the Sisters of Perpetual Adoration, St. Paul's Terrace, This (Tuesday), at 11 a.m., for Toowong Cemetery. Mass at 6.20
