Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Private Israel Smith (Service No:W67885) served in the ACMF with 2nd (Fremantle) Battalion VDC from 24 March 1942 to 31 July 1945. Before immigrating, Private Smith had served with the British Army in WWI as a Private attached to Price of Williams' Own (West Yorkshire) Regiment (Regimental No:27913). Two sons (Cyril and Stanley) also served in WWII.

Israel was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1890, third of five children of Israel Smith Snr (b1859 in Buckingham, England) and Mary Jane Martin (b1866 in Belfast, Northern Ireland). Israel Snr was a Private in the 2/19th Regiment in 1883 when he and Mary married in Belfast, Northern Ireland. By 1885 Israel Snr and Mary had settled in Scotland, where they raised their family and Israel Snr was a Foundry (Iron) Worker. In 1900 the family moved to Yorkshire, where Israel Snr continued as an Iron (Foundry) Worker.

Israel worked in Yorkshire, England as a Brickyard Labourer and Clay Moulder, and in 1913 in Leeds married Lillian (Lily) Maud Burk (b1897 in Leeds, Yorkshire, England) - Lily was a Domestic Servant. Following his Discharge from the British Army in 1916, Israel and Lily lived in Leeds, where they raised their family and Israel was a General Labourer. In 1922 Israel and Lily immigrated with their two sons (Cyril and Stanley), arriving in Albany, Western Australia on board the Themistocles - Israel gave his occupation as Engine Overhauler. The family initially lived in Busselton, where Israel worked as a Cartman, before moving to Claremont in 1928 - Israel worked as a Grocer's Assistant. By the 1930s, Israel and Lily had settled in Perth, where Israel was a Greengrocer. Following his Discharge from the Army in 1945, Israel and Lily settled in North Perth - Israel worked as a Yardman and Lily as a Cook. Israel died in 1954 and Lily in 1966.
