Private Thomas Alexander Forrest 62257 was born on 1 January 1899 at Murrin Murrin a now abandoned mining town near Kalgoorlie in WA. Murrin is actually an indgenous word for a species of Acacia tree common in the area, Murrin Murrin simply refers to the vast number of these trees in the area. Thomas was reputed to be the son of Alexander Forrest (brother of Lord John Forrest, the second Premier of WA) and Ngingala (Eva Trilby Mickey). He enlisted in the Australian Army on the 9th December 1915 and initially served as part of the 10th Australian Light Horse during World War I (no record of this has been found in the NAA). His son Kenneth also served in World War II.
