Bessie was the daughter of Alexander and Marjory McPhail.

Bessie enlisted as a Sister with the Australian Army Nursing Service in 1916.and serrved with the No 4 Sea transport section between England & France and Australia.

Aappointed Matron of the Eye and Ear Hospital in 1940.
