Private Sydney David Egan (Service No:V83112) served in the ACMF with 3 Garrison Battlion from 26 February 1940 to 30 May 1940 - Discharged as Medically Unfit for Service. In WWI he served as a Sapper in the New Zealand Army Expeditionary Force (Service No:4/725) with 2nd Field Engineers in Gallipoli and France.
Sydney was born in Gisborne, New Zealand in 1895, only child of Ann (Annie) Egan (nee Spicer; b abt 1873 in England) and Sydney David Egan (b1837 in England) - Sydney used numerous aliases, including William Ewart Morgan and George Angus Everard, and was arrested in England on charges of bigamy with at least five different women. Sydney Snr was described (Trove; 1890) as 'having the appearance of a seafaring man ... described himself as an Engineer' and had been imprisoned in New Zealand on at least one occasion. Annie settled in Palmerston, NZ where she raised her son.
Sydney worked in Canterbury NZ as a Labourer before enlsiting in the NZ Army. Following his Discharge, Sydney moved to Victoria - living in Traralgon and Sale where he worked as a Motor Driver and Labourer. In 1934 in Sale, Sydney married Frieda Pauline Blucher (b1913 in Morwell, Victoria). Sydney and Frieda lived in Sale, Maffra and Straford, where Sydney worked as a Labourer. In 1945, Sydney and Frieda separated - Frieda moved to Melbourne where she remarried in 1963. Sydney remained in Sale, where he died in 1963.
