Neville Francis Check was the fourth of nine children born to Francis Joseph 'Frank' Check, a hairdresser, and his wife Helena Bray.
Neville's older brother died as an infant before Neville's birth and so he grew up effectively the oldest son in the family.
Neville and his family lived at Pyrmont in Sydney, above the hairdressing shop in which his father worked.
Neville's mother died when he was 13. Soon after leaving school Neville started working as a labourer.
At age 20 Neville enlisted in the Militia, completing infantry training at Greta and Rutherford in the Hunter Valley, and was involved in Newcastle Beach Defence.
Just over a year later on 6 September 1941 Neville aged 21 married 19 year old Eunice Carroll.
On 1 October 1943 Neville enlisted in the 2nd AIF, where he spent the next few years defending Australia during WW2. Most of Neville's service was spent across the border within the Queensland Line of Communication in regional towns like Warwick. Units included 15 Garrison Battalion and various Base Ordnance Depots.
In January 1946 Neville was promoted to the rank of Corporal, and was discharged from the army in June that same year.
Neville and Eunice raised four children, three sons and a daughter. The family moved to Chester Hill in the early 1950s and Neville started working as a hairdresser like his father, as well as a sister and brother.
Eunice died in 1995 and Neville died in 1998. Both were cremated, and eventually their remains were interred in the same grave at Rookwood as Neville's parents and infant brother.
