Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Private Harry George Newman (Service No:W88346) served in the ACMF (19 February 1942 - 18 September 1945) with 8 Goldfields Battalion (WA) VDC.

Harry was born in Perth, Western Australia in 1915, eldest (surviving) of eleven children of Henry John Newman (b1888 in London, England) and Nellie Louise Ashford (b1888 in Nottinghamshire, Engalnd). Henry (an Omnibus Conductor) and Nellie married in 1909 in London, and following the deaths of their first three infants, immigrated in 1913, arriving in Fremantle on board the Ajana. Henry and Nellie settled in Perth, where Henry was an Iron Worker and Tin Smith. Following his Discharge from the Army (Private; Service No:4440), Henry and Nellie lived in Fremantle, where Henry was a Steward, before settling in Northam in the early 1920s. Henry was a Caretaker/Night Watchman in Northam, before he and Nellie retired to Perth.

Harry started work as a Labourer in Geraldton, and was a Miner in Boulder in 1939 when he married Carmel Gertrude Walsh (b1917 in Boulder, Western Australia). In 1940 when he enlisted in the ACMF, Harry was working in Boulder as a Winding Engine Driver and, following his Discharge in 1945, he and Carmel lived in Northam and Kalgoorlie, where Harry worked as a Fitter and Turner. In the late 1950s Harry and Carmel moved to Medina and then Rockingham - Harry was an Engine Driver and then Draper in Rockingham. Harry died in 1995 and Carmel in 2019.
