Private William Henry Armistead (Service No:V146365) served in the ACMF from 11 February 1942 to 10 July 1942 with 24 Garrison Battalion and 3 Garrison Brigade Details. Private Armistead enlisted in the AIF on 17 October 1918 (Service No:81856) and was Medically Boarded and Discharged (Unfit for Service) on 20 December 1918.
Bill was born at Deans Marsh via Birregurrah, Victoria in 1897, youngest of eight children of John Armistead (b1855 in Geelong, Victoria) and Harriet Elizabeth Mousley (b1857 in Geelong, Victoria). John and Harriet married in 1883 in Bambra, Victoria and lived in the Winchelsea region (Deans Marsh, Birregurra and Boonah) where John was a Bullock Driver and Farmer. Harriet died in 1907, and John in July1919 ('death by self inflicted gun shot': Inquest) - his two youngest sons, Horace and Bill, were home at the time and found his body.
Bill worked as a Labourer and Farmer in Boonah via Birregurra, and in 1921 in Winchelsea, married Olive Campbell (b1896 in Creswell via Ballarat, Victoria). Bill and Olive lived at Boonah via Birregurra where they raised their family and Bill was a Farmer. By 1931, the family had settled in Winchelsea, where Bill worked as a Sawmill Hand until retirement in the 1960s. Olive died in 1971 and Bill in 1972.
