Enlisted at the age of 18 years and 8 months, served at Gallipoli and was wounded in action, 26 July 1915, gunshot wound to the back. He was invalided to England and after recovering from his wounds was discharged to the Royal Flying Corps, 29 February 1916, as a 2nd Lieutenant. He served with the 29th Squadron RFC on the Western Front from 21 June 1916. He was flying a DH Scout no.5994 when he was shot down east of Ypres on patrol. He remained a prisoner of war until he was repatriated to England on 2 January 1919.
Posted to No. 29 Training Depot Station, 3 March 1919; No. 11 Training Depot Station, 29 May 1919; No. 11 Squadron, 13 July 1919; Central Flying School, 18 August 1919; Repatriation Camp, Winchester, 17 October 1919. On the Unemployed List, 7 February 1920. Relinquished commission and permitted to retain rank, 1 September 1921.
