Humphrey left Australia on board HMAT Borda for Egypt on 11 March 1916, where he served until sent to France with the 10th Battalion on 16 June. On 26 July 1918 he was shot in the right thigh during action. Humphrey was invalided from France to England where he was admitted to Beaufort War Hospital on 9 August. His mother was notified on 29 August. Failure to improve physically resulted in Humphrey being returned to Australia on the Pakeha on 6 October 1919 and discharged on 13 April 1920.
