Private Harold Alexander Barby (Service No:VX96531) served in the AIF from 28 February 1945 to 1 April 1947. Private Barby was attached to 115 Military Hospital Heidelberg at Discharge. His father Peter, and wife Frances also served in WWII.
Harry was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1927, second of five children of Peter Daniel Barby (b1899 in Foxhow, Victoria) and Alice Elizabeth Nairn (b1902 in Buangor, Victoria). Peter was a Labourer in Foxhow when he and Alice married in 1924 in Buangor, and lived in Melbourne where Peter worked as a Plasterer. In the early 1930s, Peter and Alice moved to Middle Creek, Beaufort where Peter was a Labourer and where, in 1940, eldest son Max drowned. The family then settled in Buangor, where Peter worked as a Labourer. Following Alice's death in 1952, Peter settled in Ararat where he worked as a Station Hand.
Harry was a Labourer in Buangor when he enlisted in the Army and, following his Discharge, was an Orderley with the Repatriation Department in 1948 when he married Frances Trigg (b1921 in Colac, Victoria) - Frances served with the Army in WWII (Private; Service No:VFX92027). Harry worked as a Laundryman and Timber Worker and Frances as a Shop Assistant in Colac before Farming in Glenthompson and Casterton from the mid 1950s to mid 1960s. In the late 1960s Frances was living in Portland with the children and Harry was a Storeman in Syndal in Melbourne. Harry died in 1970 and Frances in 1999.
