He was 18 and the son of Charles James and Laura Amy Burton, of 115, Osbaldeston Rd., Stoke Newington, London, England. They chose the following inscription for his war grave:

ONLY A BOY BUT DIED AS A MAN FOR LIBERTY & FREEDOM HIS MUM & DAD

He is remembered on the family grave at Chingford Mount Cemetery, London E.4.
