Trevena was wounded in action 26 September 1917 with the 53rd Battalion, a gunshot wound to the buttock and evacuated to England, wounded a second time 17 April 1918, gassed, and out of action for 6 weeks. He was mortally wounded at Peronne in France, a shrapnel or bullet wound to the right eye and died of wounds in a General Hospital at Rouen in France 6 days later.
His brother 10276 Lance Corporal James William Oliver Trevena 14th Field Company Engineers was also gassed and wounded in action twice before being returned to Australia 9 March 1919.
