Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Eldest of five siblings (Sam, Gordon, Bill and Ken) who served in WWII, Lance Sergeant Gregory Lavington Davies (Service Nos:W239/WX26910) initially served in the Senior Cadets (1918/1919: 28th Battalion) and the Militia (10th Light Horse Regiment; Trooper; Service No:240932) from 8 June 1936 to 14 March 1941. Trooper Davies then enlisted in the ACMF on 23 December 1941, and was a Corporal with 10th Light Horse Regiment on 20 August 1942 when he transferred to the AIF. Described as 'a steady, reliable type' (NAA), Lance Sergeant Davies was attached to 10th Light Horse Regiment at Discharge on 30 December 1943.

Greg was born in Boulder, Western Australia in 1904, second of nine children of Samuel Romney Davies (b1878 at Wasleys in South Australia) and Maude McKennay (b1883 in Kapunda, South Australia). Samuel (a Miner) and Maude married in 1902 in Boulder, where they lived until 1910 when the family settled in Toodyay and Samuel was a Farmer and Orchardist on 'Strathavon'. In 1940 Samuel and Maude moved to Wattle Grove in Canning where he was an Orchardist.

Greg was a Seventh Day Adventist Missionary Student in 1925 when he and his friend (Missionary Nevill Westwood) set off from Bickley in Western Australia, initially bound for Darwin, in 'Bubsie' (a 1923 Citroen) to sell books and collect donations. They continued around Australia (Greg left the expedition in Albury). Greg then worked as a Farm Hand at Fulham via Toodyay, and in 1928 in Fremantle married Shirley Berenice Pryke (b1904 in Fremantle, Western Australia). Greg and Shirley settled in Chidlow, where Greg was an Orchardist before moving to Pinjarra. Greg was a Machinery Salesman in 1940 when he enlisted in the Army, and following his Discharge, he and Shirley moved to Clackline in the Avon Valley - 'The Grange Orchard'. In the early 1960s Greg and Shirley were in Pingelly and Greg worked as a Company Representative. By 1968 they had settled in Kalamunda (Glenn Forrest/Forrestdale), where Greg was again an Orchardist. Shirley died in 1986 and Greg in 1988.
