Born on 9 November 1892 in Toodyay to Jessie Burton, a woman of Aboriginal descent from the Albany area who had been raised at the Annesfield Native Institution.
At the age of two-and-a-half, Lewis was admitted to the Swan Native and Half-Caste Mission where he was raised and educated.
