Ronald was born on 13 September 1919 in Bunbury. He enlisted on 1 August 1942 at Calingiri and was assigned to the 10th Light Horse Regiment. At the time of enlistment, he was a single share farmer of the Church of England faith. He initially identified his father, Edward Asplin, as his next of kin, but later changed to Mrs W Kenny of Nannup, his sister. At the time of his discharge in January 1945, Ronald had served 1095 days.
Ronald had multiple family members who served: Edward Asplin (father, WW1), Colin Asplin (brother, WW2), Kevin Asplin (brother, WW2), and Joan Asplin (spouse, WW2).
