One of four siblings who served in WWII (Dardanella, Ernest, Margaret and Roderick), Trooper Ernest Alexander McRae (Service No:V25993) served in the ACMF with 26 Machine Gun Regiment from 16 August 1940 to 29 January 1942.
Born in Warracknabeal, Victoria in 1919, Ernest was sixth of seven children of Roderick (William) Seaman McRae (b1926 in Ararat, Victoria) and Florence (Flora) Myrtle Millstead (b1891 in Geelong, Victoria). William (a Labourer) and Flora married in 1908 in Warracknabeal, where they settled and raised their family. William served in the AIF in WWI (Private; Service No:1660) and was WiA at Gallipoli (GSW resulting in amputation of leg). William and Flora remained in Warracknabela, where William was a Labourer until his death in 1926. Flora died in 1929.
Ernest was working as a Butcher's Assistant in Warracknabeal in 1940 when he enlisted in the Army. Following his Discharge in 1942, he was a Munitions Worker in Melbourne, and in 1945 in Warracknabeal married Lexie May Klinghorn (b1927 in Hopetoun, Victoria). Ernest and Lexie lived in Warracknabeal, where Ernest worked as a Porter. In the early 1950s they settled in Melbourne, where they raised their family and Ernest was a Butcher until his death in 1970. Lexie died in 2001.
