Archibald was born in Scotland, and had a brother William Johnston Matthew (my great-grandfather) who was a professional soldier, and was killed in action in France near Arras in 1917. He also had another brother James Matthew, who also served as a Marine Steward and like Archibald joined the Australian army in WWI. He was married in Australia, but the couple appear to have separated in the 1930s. There is a family story that he was murdered in 1939 and his ashes were sent home to Scotland. Like many family stories, it may not be true, but I have been unable to find any evidence of a newspaper article or death certificate.
