John Patrick O’rielly (1899-1955)

 

John Patrick O’Rielly, sister of Miss Mary O’Rielly was a hardworking soldier that served for Australia in the first world war. John Patrick was born in July of 1889; he was born in the South Australian town of Stepney. Before enlisting for the first world war, he worked as a labourer, and had no experience of fighting for any other form of war.

John Patrick Enlisted for the First World War as a soldier on the first of May in 1916 as a 26-year-old man. Shortly after he was enlisted for the war, he was forced to embark on the HMAT A70 Ballarat ship, he boarded the ship from Adelaide which was close to his hometown Stepney. John Patrick was not moved to another unit during the war, he stayed fighting with the 32nd battalion until is time at war was cut short due to his body being medically unfit. John Patrick was shipped from Adelaide up to a town in the UK at the time called Hurdcott where he spent several months training. John Patrick then marched out to Weymouth on 15/3/17.

As John Patrick was shown to be very medically unfit, shortly after his arrival at Weymouth, on the 4th of May 1917 he was discharged from the war and safely returned to Australia. John Patrick O’Rielly then lived his life in Australia until he passed away at 65 years of age on the 12th of May 1955.
