70 years ago today, on the Monday afternoon of the 27th September 1954, Private Ralph Henry Blackett, referred to as Rallo, 34th Battalion (Reg No-369), fettler from 2 Corlette Street, Cooks Hill, New South Wales and 25 Nevill Street, Mayfield, N.S.W., father of three (Rob, Cis, Mavis), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 72. ANGLICAN 3-193. 48.
Born at Charter's Towers, Queensland on the 5th February 1882 to Robert, died 8.1.1894, Stockton, N.S.W., age 48, from William Street, Stockton, N.S.W., and Emily Blackett (Lasen) nee Robinson, died 31.5.1938, Pittown, Wallsend, N.S.W., age 78, mother of 7, sleeping at the cemetery ANGLICAN 1-04. 54, from 35 Ridge Street, Merewether, New South Wales; husband of Annie (Ann, Anne) Blackett nee Walker, married 12.6.1906, Wickham, N.S.W., died 16.11.1983, Hamilton, N.S.W., age 96, Ralph enlisted on the 14th January 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A20 Hororata on the 2nd May 1916.
Admitted to hospital 8.2.1917 (lobar pneumonia, severe), 16.9.1917 (pneumonia & pleurisy).
Wounded in action 30.9.1917 by hostile aircraft whilst a patient at the 58th General Hospital, St Omer, France (type of wound not stated).
Transferred to England 25.10.1917.
Commenced return to Australia 1.2.1918.
Ralph arrived home on the 28th March 1918, being discharged medically unfit on the 26th June 1918.
Mr. Blackett’s name has been inscribed on the Cooks Hill Superior Public School Roll of Honour, Newcastle District Tramway Employees Roll of Honour and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.
I have placed poppies at Rallo’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Younger brother Joseph or Joe, born 15.5.1892 Stockton, New South Wales, carter from 6 off Corlette Street, Cooks Hill, New South Wales and 35 Ridge Street, Merewether, N.S.W., enlisted 19.1.1915, 4th Battalion, Reg No-1915, wounded in action - 19.4.1917 (near Gaza, GSW abdomen and back), admitted to hospital 17.8.1917 (old GSW), 5.11.1917 (pain in old GSW, malaria), RTA invalided 30.1.1918, 1st Anzac Battalion Imperial Camel Corps, died from pneumonic influenza 21.6.1919, age 27, resting at the cemetery - ANGLICAN 1-04. 54,
Younger brother Charles Edward or Edwin, born 27.1.1891, Stockton, New South Wales, married fettler from Wallsend, New South Wales and 6 Corlette Street, Cooks Hill, N.S.W., enlisted 13.1.1916, 34th Battalion, Reg No-368, RTA 3.1.1918, died 14.2.1971, Belmont, N.S.W., age 80, not officially commemorated.
Charles had been suffering from shell shock.
