Les was the eldest of three children of William James Cooper (b1877 in Berkshire, England) and Melitta Cooper (b1878 in Berkshire, England). When they married in 1905 William was a Coachman and Melitta Post Office Attendant, and by 1911 the family was living at Little New Farm in Sulhamstead, Berkshire where William was a Farmer. The family emigrated in 1912, arriving in Fremantle WA on board the Armadale. They lived in Gin Gin and Wubin where William was a Farm Manager, before settling in Buntine, Dalwalinu, WA where WIlliam was a Farmer.
Les worked as a Farm Labourer and Farmer in Buntine WA, and in 1930 married Edna Mary Johnston (b1902 in Perth WA). The couple settled in Buntine, where Les was a Sheep Stud Manager when he enlisted in the ACMF in October 1942. He served with 13 and 17 Battalions VDC (Private; Service No:W75475).
In 1949 Les continued work as a Farmer, and he and Edna moved to Carnamah WA, and then in the early 1970s to Mandurah WA. Les died in May 1988 and Edna in September the same year.
