Doug was the youngest of six children of George (Bill) Alfred William Austin (b1879 in Launceston, Tasmania) and Clara Elizabeth Carey (b1881 in Scottsdale, Tasmania). Bill ( a Labourer) and Clara married in 1906 in Scottsdale, Tasmania where they settled and raised their family. Bill worked as a Labourer.

Doug was a Labourer in Scottsdale when he enlisted in the Militia in April 1940. He was a Trooper (Service No:497112) with 22 Light Horse Regiment, which in 1942 was renamed 22nd Motor Regiment when horses were withdrawn. Doug was Discharged in May 1943 (Trooper; Service No:T42640) - released for farm work.

In 1947 Doug was a Farmer at Ferndale in Scottsdale when he married Ivy Veronica Kincade (b1929 in Branxholm, Tasmania). Doug and Ivy settled in Scottsdale where Doug was a Farmer. He died in 1993 and Ivy in 2010.
