Elder of the two brothers (Norman and Wilfred) who served in WWII, Corporal Norman Francis Pickering (Service Nos:V225756/VX113858) initially served in the ACMF as a Private, and was attached to 107th Mobile Bath Unit on 26 August 1942 when he Discharged to enlist 'in the field' the following day in the AIF. Promoted to Corporal on 12 October 1943, he completed two tours in New Guinea (12 July 1943 - 22 December 1943 and 11 February 1944 - 7 April 1944), and was attached to 107th Mobile Bath Unit at Discharge on 11 December 1945.
Born in Stawell, Victoria in 1913, Norman was eldest of nine children of Francis (Frank) John Pickering (b1885 in Stawell, Victoria) and Hannah Jane Williams (b1892 in Stawell, Victoria). Frank was a Labourer at Fyan's Creek via Stawell when he and Hannah married in 1913 in Stawell, where they settled and raised their family and Frank worked as a Labourer. In the mid 1920s Frank and Hannah moved their family to Murtoa, where Frank worked as a Carpenter, and in his later years as a Water Ranger.
Norman was a Grocer in Murtoa, where in 1938 he married Theresa Katherine Pianta (b1916 in Murtoa, Victoria). Norman and Theresa settled in Murtoa, where they raised their family and Norman was a Grocer and, in later years, a Merchant. Norman died in 2000 and Theresa died in 2009.
