William’s last name was Von Blanckensee. His parents migrated from Europe to Brisbane which is where William was born in 1898. School was not his thing and he left during his third year of high school. He moved to the North West of WA and worked as a station hand.
He enlisted in the Australian Army Medical Corps on 21 January 1918 when he was 19. However, he had fallen off a horse while working and it resulted in a severe stutter. William was discharged from the Army on 25 April 1918 as not fit for duty.
William married Violet Dodd (nee Rumble) in 1938 and was working as a prospector when he enlisted in 11 Battalion, Volunteer Defence Corps, on 29 September 1942. He was 44 at the time. He served in Port Hedland, WA, for two years and was discharged on 29 December 1944.
Violet died in Lesmurdie, a suburb of Perth, in 1971 aged 79 and William died seven years later in 1978, also aged 79.
