Robert (born in 1890 in Yorkshire, England) was the fourth of nine children of Robert Barker (born 1861 in Pickering, Yorkshire) and Maria Woodall (born 1859 in Seamer, Yorkshire). The family immigrated to Queensland, Australia in 1891, settling at Helidon on the Darling Downs in QLD, where Robert Jnr worked as a Labourer and Farmer.

Robert's brothers Sydney Thompsaon and Francis Gibson, and his brothers - in -law Patrick Stack and Harry St John King also served in WWI. Robert enlisted in January 1916 and served with the AIF as a Private (Service No: 814) with 41st Battalion until his Discharge in January 1920.

In 1919 following the Armistace, Robert worked in Scarborough, Yorkshire for Robert Henry Thompson and married his daughter Edith Jane in Scarborough, Yorkshire on 20 June 1919. Robert returned to Australia in September 1919 and was Discharged in January 1920.

Robert returned to England and he and Edith lived in Scarborough, where Robert was a Bricklayer in 19139. He died in Yorkshire in 1964 and Edith died in 1967
