Les was the elsdet of six children of Albert Edward Ward (b1871 in Sydney, NSW) and Henrietta Emma Busse (aka Emma; b1872 in Buenos Aires, Argentina). Emma arrived with her father in melbourne, Victoria in May 1882 on board the Amalfi. Albert (a LRailway Line Repairer) and Emma married in Perth WA in 1901. They settled in Kelmscott WA where Albert was a Line Reapairer, later moving to Perth.

Les worked as a Teamster and in 1917 enlisted in the AIF (giving his borthdate as 1898), He served as a Trooper (Service No:3377) with 10th Light Horse Regiment and was a Driver attached to 8th Sanitary Section when he was Discharged in August 1919.

Les returned to Perth WA and in 1919 married Sophia (Sis) Louisa May Otway (b1898 in Beverley WA). Les and Sis lived in Perth and Canning WA and had three children - their two sons served in the RAN in WWII. By 1930 Les and Sis had divorced and Sis remarried. Les travelled the country looking for work, and was in Murrurundi (Upper Hunter) NSW in 1940 when he enlisted in the Australian Army.

Les served as a Private (Service No:NX26031) and was attached to 2/4th Pioneer Battalion when he was Discharged in May 1942. 

Les returned to Perth, WA where he worked as a Storeman. He died in 1986.
