Clive Leicester Johnson was a bank accountant prior to enlisting on 13 January 1915. Johnson initially enlisted as a Private, serving with the 1st Light Horse Regiment and briefly served at Gallipoli. He was promoted to Second Lieutenant upon embarking for overseas service. Lt Johnson was seconded to the Royal Flying Corps to undertake aeronautical training in December 1916. Upon completing training in March 1917, Lt Johnson transferred to the No 2 Squadron Australian Flying Corps. He was wounded by shrapnel in the face when flying a DH5 aircraft on patrol. Evacuated to England, hee returned to Australia in August 1918.
