88 years ago today, on the Wednesday afternoon of the 17th July 1935, Private John Matthew Ranahan, 2nd Australian Remount Unit (Reg No-2208), labourer from Albion Street, Warwick, Queensland and 61 Maitland Road, Mayfield, New South Wales (1920) and 11 Roe Street, Mayfield, N.S.W., father of two (John, Phillip), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 72. CATHOLIC 2-38. 11.
Born at Glenorchy, Tasmania on the 8th April 1863 to Henry J and Annie Ranahan of William Street, Singleton, N.S.W.; husband of Annie Margaret Ranahan nee? (married? died 19.9.1950, Mayfield, N.S.W., age?, sleeping), John enlisted on the 14th October 1915, (age 52 years, 6 months!) at Warwick, Queensland.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT RMS Orontes on the 10th November 1915.
John returned home on the 31st May 1916 (demobilsed Unit, disbanded 1st April 1916), being discharged on the 19th June 1916.
Mr. Ranahan’s name has been inscribed on The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.
I have placed poppies at John’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
Issued all 3 War Medals.

Younger brother Phillip George (Phil, born 6.11.1890?, Glenorchy, Tasmania, horse shoer and wheelwright from Albion Street, Warwick, Queensland, enlisted 20.8.1914, an Original Anzac, 2nd Light Horse Regiment, Reg No-375, Mentioned in Despatches, RTA 1949?, Major?, died Egypt?, not officially commemorated) also served 1st A.I.F.
