One of four siblings (David, Walter, Irene and William) who served in WWII, Private Walter Robert Fisher (Service No:VX51364) enlisted in the AIF on 13 March 1941 and marched out to AASC Training Depot and 2 Training Battalion. Private/Driver Fisher was attached to 2/7 Infantry Battalion on 6 August 1941 when he embarked with his Unit from Sydney for the Middle East. On 9 March 1942 Private Fisher embarked from the Middle East for Ceylon, and then from Ceylon to Melbourne on 12 July 1942. Private Fisher served in New Guinea (June - November 1943 and February - March 1944), and was attached to 9 Reinforcements 2/7 Battalion at Discharge on 4 April 1945.
Born in Sunbury, Victoria in 1921, Walter was third of nine children of Alfred (Alf) Joseph Fisher (b1892 in Narrandera, New South Wales) and Veronica Ellen Falvey (b1899 at Riddells Creek in Victoria). Alf was a Labourer when he enlisted in the AIF (Private; Service No:794) in April 1917, and he and Veronica married in September 1917 in Sunbury. Following his Discharge from the Army, Alf and Veronica settled in Sunbury where they raised their family and Alf worked as a Labourer and later as an Asylum Attendant.
Walter worked as Truck Driver in Sunbury before enlisting in the Army in 1941, and in Melbourne in 1944 married Gladys May Smith (b1922 in Mooroopna, Victoria). Following his Discharge from the Army, Walter and Gladys settled in Melbourne, where they raised their family and Walter worked as a Mill Hand and then as Foreman until his death in 1983.
