Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Private Robert Charles Hirth (Service No:V75634) enlisted in the ACMF (following rejection for the AIF) on 21 March 1941 and was attached to 114 Reserve Motor Transport Coy (M). Once completing basic training, Private Hirth was transferred to Area 21 (Timber Industry) Mount Martha on 2 February 1942 for return to work in the timber industry. When Private Hirth requested Discharge Papers in 1946, he was advised that as he 'was not mobilised for full time war service ... there is no certificate which may be issued in respect of such service as you did perform' (NAA).

Born in 1916 in Dartmoor Victoria, Robert was the youngest of two children of William (Willie) Arthur Hirth (b1881 in Mount Gambier, South Australia) and Frances (Fanny) Hoskins (b1895 in Dartmoor, Victoria). Willie was a Farmer in Mount Gambier, SA before moving to Dartmoor, Victoria where he was a Labourer in 1914 when he and Fanny married. The couple settled in Dartmoor where they raised their family and Willie worked as a Labourer and Gardener.

Robert worked in Dartmoor as a Sawmill Hand before his enlistment in the ACMF. He remained in Dartmoor where he worked as a Labourer. Robert died in 1974.
