Private Leslie Edward Wells (Service No:WX14319) initially served with the Militia (Private; 28th Battalion) before enlisting in the AIF on 18 June 1941. Private Wells served as a Driver with 109 Reserve Motor Transport Coy and 137 General Transport Coy, and was attached to 7th Australian Supply Depot at Discharge on 14 October 1944.
Born in Collie, Western Australia in 1904, Les was second of five children of Herbert Edward Wells (b1872 at Durham Lead, Ballarat, Victoria) and Phillipa Mary Catherine Bayley (b1879 at Cross Roads, Daly, South Australia). Herbert moved to Western Australia in 1895 and worked as a Miner and Bootmaker in Fremantle, Coolgardie and Leonora. Herbert and Phillipa married in 1900 in Coolgardie, and settled in Collie where they raised their family and Herbert was a Bootmaker, Salesman and Auctioneer. Herbert served in the AIF in WWI (Quarter Master/Hon Captain) and, following his Discharge, he and Phillipa settled in Perth. Herbert was an Auctioneer and Politician, and was involved in his local community as a Justice of the Peace/Commissioner for Peace, Mayor of Collie, Member and Chair of the Collie Road Board, Councillor for Victoria Park and Member of Parliament, and President of the Victoria Park Sub Branch of the RSL and a member of the RSL State Executive.
Les was working in Perth as a Clerk in 1941 when he enlisted in the Army, and following his Discharge became an Auctioneer in partnership with his father (HE Wells & Son). In the early 1960s in Perth, Les married Phyllis (b1909) and settled in Lesmurdie, where he worked as an Auctioneer. Les died in 1987 and Phyllis in 1996.
