Sergeant Eric Lennox Crofton Atkinson (Service No:VX25866) enlisted in the AIF on 12 June 1940 and was attached as a Private to 4th Training Brigade - graded Battery Surveyor. Private Atkinson was atatched to 2nd/11th Field Regiment when he emabarked with his Unit from Sydney for the Middle East on board the Ile de France on 10 April 1941. Returning to Adelaide in July 1942, Sergeant Atkinson served in New Guinea (Lae and Bougainville) from 4 October 1944 to 20 February 1945 and from 27 April 1945 to 20 September 1945. Sergeant Atkinson was Discharged on 5 October 1945.
Eric was born in Sale, Victoria in 1903, fifth of six children of Lennox Lett Atkinson (b1874 in Stratford, Victoria) and his first wife Isabella Blanche Crofton Staveley (b1871 in Sale, Victoria). Lennox and Isabella married in 1896 in Sale, where they settled and raised their family and Lennox was a Farmer. Following Isabella's death in 1907, Lennox remarried and raised a further five children with second wife Josephine. Lennox remained in Sale, where he was a Farmer and Grazzier.
Eric worked as a Bank Clerk and Bank Officer with the Bank of Australia in Melbourne before and after his service in the Army. He was Acting Bank Manager when he collapsed and died at his desk in 1952.
