Youngest of two brothers (Walter and Ted) who served in the Army in WWII, Private Edward Swinton (Service No:N482264) served in the ACMF with 1 Returned Stores Depot from 25 April 1945 to 15 January 1947.
Ted was born in Greta, New South Wales in 1927, fifth of six children of Walter (Dick) Swinton (b1896 in Greta, New South Wales) and Doris Mary Boyle (b1900 at Anvil Creek via Greta, New South Wales). Dick served in the AIF in WWI (Private; Service No:2463), and was a Miner in 1921 when he and Doris married in Greta, where they settled and raised their family and Dick was a miner at the New Greta and the Leconsfield Collieries. Dick served with the ACMF in WWII (Corporal; Service No:N270163).
Ted was an Apprentice Jockey in Sydney before enlisting in the Army in 1945. Following his Discharge from the Army, Ted completed his Apprenticeship, and in 1949 in Sydney married Lola Mary Ahearn (b1923 in Sydney, New South Wales) - Lola was working in Sydney as a Clerk. Ted and Lola settled in Sydney, where they raised their family and Ted was a Jockey. He worked from stables in Sydney (Moorfield) and Victoria, and was one of the early Australian Jockeys to ride overseas - India, Ceylon, England, Ireland and Singapore - 'They were global jockeys before their time' (Anne Field; 2016). Ted was one of the first committee members of the Jockeys' Association NSW. On 23 November 2009, Max Presnell wrote 'Ted Swinton, one of the mainstays behind the Tulloch Lodge operation, died at Port Macquarie last week .... Bob Rowles, in charge of the jockeys' room for more than half a century, gave Swinton a fitting tribute "He was a character and a lovely bloke" he said' (The Sydney Morning Herald; 23 November 2009). Lola died in 2004.
