Leonard's parents were Martin Henry Warneminde and Ellen Elizabeth Collins. Leonard's father was the licensed victualler of the North Pine Hotel in 1903. Leonard attended North Pine State School. Leonard enlisted 29 May 1915 at Brisbane. His unit embarked from Brisbane, Queensland, on board HMAT A55 Kyarra on 16 August 1915. He returned to Australia in 1919. He settled in Victoria Park, Perth Western Australia his occupation was a labourer. Two of Leonard's brothers enlisted Claude James [Lieutenant] who died and Herman Martin [64].
