Private Robert McMahon (Service No:VX37962) initially served in the Militia (Service No:318412) with 8th Field Brigade from 21 August 1933 to 8 August 1935. Gunner McMahon enlisted in the AIF on 29 July 1940 and served with 2/14 Field Regiment. Gunner McMahon was attached to 2/2 Field Regiment on 29 June 1941 when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for Palestine, serving in Suez before embarking for Ceylon on 24 March 1942, and from Ceylon for Melbourne on 8 August 1942. Private McMahon was attached to 2/12 Field Regiment at Discharge on 23 November 1944.
Robert Joseph was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1909, youngest of twelve children of Michael Thomas McMahon (b1864 in Burrumbeet, Victoria) and Margaret (Maggie) Piper (b1871 in Melbourne, Victoria). Michael (a Labourer) and Maggie married in 1887 in Melbourne, where they settled and raised their family and Michael was a Labourer and Quarryman. Sons Ernest, Thomas, Frank, James and Robert served in the Amy and RAN.
Robert worked as a Boot Finisher in Melbourne where, in 1935, he married Alice Jean McKenzie (b1913 in Melbourne, Victoria). Robert and Alice settled in Melbourne where they raised their family and Robert worked as a Boot Finisher before his enlistment in the Army. Following his Discharge, Robert and Alice settled in Melbourne (Coburg) where Robert worked as a Warder until his death in 1952 - Alice died in 2005.
