Signalman Edgar James Kennedy (Service No:WX31196) enlisted on four occasions for service in WWII. Initially he enlisted as a Private (Service No:WX12812) with 1 Training Battalion on 14 May 1941. Private Kennedy discharged on 20 June 1941 to enlist in the RAAF on 21 June 1941. He was an Aircraftman II attached to 4 Initial Training School when he was discharged as medically unfit on 19 October 1941. He re-enlisted in the ACMF on 24 March 1942 as a Lance Corporal (Service No:W44835) attached to 29 Garrison Battalion (WA) and was on Rottnest Island when he transferred to the AIF on 5 August 1942. Signalman Kennedy served with 10 Garrison Battalion and was attached to 1 Signals Training Battalion at Discharge on 29 September 1944.
Born in Broome, WA in 1915, Jim was fourth of seven children of Herbert (Bert) Thomas Kennedy (b1883 in Melbourne, Victoria) and Isobel (Nell) Margaret Millar (b1887 in Broome, WA). Bert (a Shipping Clerk) and Nell married in 1911 in Broome, WA where they settled and raised their family and Bert worked as a Pearler and Shipping Clerk.
Jim started work as a Shipping Clerk in Broome, and was a Shipping Clerk in Perth WA in 1941 when he married Rhoda Evelyn Reynolds (b1919 in Perth, WA) - Rhoda had lived in Broome in the 1930s with her parents. Following his Discharge in 1944, Jim and Rhoda settled in Broome, WA where Jim worked as a Shipping Clerk, Shipping Agent and Assistant Clerk of Courts. They were briefly back in Perth in 1980 before returning to Broome where Jim died in 1987 and Rhoda in 2000.
