Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

CORNELIUS SIDNEY BARBELER was born at Tinana on 2nd of February 1896 the son of Conrad and Annie Barbeler.

His father Conrad was the son of German immigrants who arrived in Sydney aboard the "Catteaux Wattell" in 1855 sailing from Hamburg in 1854.

His mother Annie (Cuttler) arrived in Hervey Bay aboard the "David Mclvor" on 9th July 1863.  The family consisted of George and Sarah Ann (nee Reavey) and nine of their children. They settled on the corner of Cuttlers Lane (now Bosel Road) and Iindah Road.

Sid Barbeler as he was known for most of his life, was educated at the Tinana and Christian Brothers Schools. After School he spent some time on the farm and some time in the Cuttler's Tinsmith shop in Maryborough.

In 1915, aged 19 years, he enlisted in the Light Horse and subsequently transferred to the Field Artillery - (Driver no1866). He sailed for Egypt on 3-1-1916 to complete his training before going to fight in France.

He wed Irene Catherine Cummings in 1921. Irene was the daughter of the well known Blacksmiths of Tinana who migrated from Ireland in the 1860's.  The couple had seven children.

Sid was well known to Maryborough householders because he delivered milk from when he returned from war until 1950. He was in a family partnership with his father and brothers producing milk.

He died on 14th November 1959 aged 72 years.
