Private William Robert Nairn (Service No:VX20278) initially served in the Militia (Service No:44610) as a Private with 8th Battalion Ouyen from 4 December 1935 to 30 May 1940. Private Nairn enlisted in the AIF on 31 May 1940 and served in the Middle East (7 February 1941 to 18 April 1942) with 1st Corp Petrol Park - graded Driver. Private Nairn was then attached to Bulk Issue Petrol and Oil Depots (6, 69 and 3) - graded Tinsmith - and served in New Guinea (17 January 1943 to 24 May 1944) - he was atatched to 6 Section BIPOD at Discharge on 14 February 1945. Older brothers Alex (KiA) and John served in WWI.
Bill was born in Buangor, Victoria in 1908, youngest of seven children of John Alexander Nairn (b1860 in Linton, Victoria) and Elizabeth Jane Austin (b1867 in Ouyen, Victoria). John was a Farmer in 1884 when he and Elizabeth married in Buangor, where they settled and raised their family, and John was a Farmer until his death in 1919.
Bill worked in Ouyen as a Labourer and was a Farmer in 1940 when he enlisted in the Army. Following his Discharge, Bill settled in Buangor where he was a Farmer. In the early 1950s he moved to Penshurst, where he was a Grazier when he died in 1957.
