John enlisted the Australian Imperial Force as a private in November 1914. He was posted to 1st Infantry Battalion, 3rd Reinforcements. After training in Australia and Egypt, he took part in the landing at Anzac Cove on 25th April 1915. He was wounded on 28th May 1915 and was repatriated to Australia. He was medically discharged in May 1916 and subsequently applied for and recieved a soldier settlement land title, taking up the property known as 'lone pine' as a farmer.
