Private Hugh Patrick Reed (Service No:185873) enlisted in the Militia on 19 July 1932. He was attached to 39th Infantry Battalion when he Discharged on 18 April 1933. On 11 March 1941 he enlisted in the ACMF (Gunner; Service No:V110198) and was attached to 2 Survey Regiment RAA (M) when he was Discharged on 18 February 1942.

Born in 1911 in Melbourne Victoria, Hugh (Chapple) was the youngest of six children of Edward John Reed (b 1870 in Ballarat, Victoria) and Rosina Blayney (b1868 in Ballarat, Victoria). Edward (a Painter - Oil and Colour Man) and Rosina married in 1895 in Ballarat, Victoria. Edward served with 5th Infantry Battalion in WWI (Private; Service No:890). Enlisting in 1914, he was WiA at Gallipoli Peninsular in 1915 and Discharged. Edward and Rosina settled in Melbourne, Victoria where Edward worked as a Glazier/Stained Glass Artist.

Chapple worked as a Piano Tuner in Melbourne, Victoria and in 1941 married Sarah (Babe) Annie Crooke (b1903 in Loch, Victoria) - Babe was a worker in the Boot Trade. Chapple and Babe settled in Melbourne, Victorie where Chapple worked as a Munitions Worker following his Discharge in 1942, then resumed work as a Piano Tuner. Chapple died in 1967 and Babe in 1977.
