William was the eighth of twelve children of Alfred Hislop (b1871 in Quindalup WA) and Alice Mary Harwood (b1875 in Quindalup WA). Alfred - a Railways Employee - and Alice married in 1896 in Quindalup WA. The family lived in Quindalup, Bunbury, Brusnwick Junction, Fremantle and Perth.
William was a Labourer in Perth WA in 1933 when he married Florence Ellen Sloan (b1914 in Bunbury WA). William was a member of the 44th Battalion Militia Band - along with his six brothers, - and also a member of the Leederville Town Band with brother Harry.
In July 1942 William enlisted in the Australian Army (Private; Service No:WX35878) attached to 52 Transport Platoon at Discharge in August 1945. Six of his brothers also served in WWI/WWII.
William and Florence settled in Wundowie (near Northam) WA after the War, and William worked as a Labourer. They relocated to Wicherina (near Greenough) in the 1960s, where William was a Water Supply Driver. He and Florence retired to Orelia in Kwinana, WA where he died in 1977. Florence died in 1991.
