Address given at the timeof enlistment was Guardian Printing Works, Lennox Street, Richmond, Victoria.

Son of William James Upton and Mary Maria Upton nee Randall of Riversdale Road, Auburn, Victoria.

30 July 1915 - enlisted at Melbourne, Victoria, with the 23rd Ballation and with the rank of Private.

23 February 1916 - transferred to the 58th Battalion at Tel-el-Kebir.

15 March 1916 - promoted to Lance Corporal

18 March 1916 - promoted to Sergeant

27 September 1917 - wounded in action. Severe shrapnel wound to the left knee.

25 November 1917 - commenced return to Australia aboard HT Karoola disembarking on 10 January 1918

Medals: British War Medal, Victory Medal

8 March 1918 -  discharged at the 3rd Military Medal as medically unfit due to wounding

During 1918c William married Nellie Ann Carpenter in Victoria.
