Son of Edward Arthur Herbert Unthank and Lillian Florence Elizabeth Unthank nee Coates of Tyabb, Victoria. 

20 May 1918 - enlisted at Melbourne with Re-inforcements for the 3rd Light Horse Regiment and with the rank of Private.

14 September 1918 - Embarked HMAT Port Darwin at Melbourne and disembarked on 20 October 1918 at Suez.

18 November 1918 - transferred to the 8th Light Horse Regiment with the rank of Trooper

3 July 1919 - Commenced return to Australia on 3 July 1919 aboard HT Malta disembarking on 7 August 1919

22 August 1919 - discharged at the 3rd Military District.
