Edward was a Steward in the Mercantile Marines in 1918 when he married Alice Eva (aka Eva) Galloway (nee Symonds; b1899 in Albany, Western Australia). Edward and Eva lived in Melbourne, where they raised their family and Edward was a Steward in the Mercantile Marines (on British and Australian ships) until the early 1930s when he became a House Painter. The Great Depression took the family to Perth, Western Australia (driving by car). Edward worked odd jobs, including as a Gold Prospector, before becoming a House Painter in Perth by 1936.
