Private Edward George McDonald (Service No:W64763) served in the ACMF as a Sapper attached to 7 Works & Parks from 26 May 1942 to 21 September 1942. Both sons (Ean and Ken) also served in WWII.
Edward was born in Dalkeith, Midlothian, Scotland in 1892, fourth of six children of George Gilchrist McDonald (b1855 in Sutherland, Scotland) and Elizabeth Edwards (b1860 in Aberdeenshire, Scotland). George (a Coachman in Sutherland) and Elizabeth (a Domestic Servant in Aberdeenshire) married in 1882 in Edinburgh, and lived in Midlothian where they raised their family and George was a Coachman.
Edward was a Steward in the Mercantile Marines in 1918 when he married Alice Eva (aka Eva) Galloway (nee Symonds; b1899 in Albany, Western Australia). Edward and Eva lived in Melbourne, where they raised their family and Edward was a Steward in the Mercantile Marines (on British and Australian ships) until the early 1930s when he became a House Painter. The Great Depression took the family to Perth, Western Australia (driving by car). Edward worked odd jobs, including as a Gold Prospector, before becoming a House Painter in Perth by 1936. Edward and Eva settled in Perth, where they raised their family, and Edward was a House Painter and Examiner of Apprentice House Painters and Decorators. Edward died in 1973 and Eva in 1993.
