Private Ernest Phillip Cranley (Service Nos:N240172/NX130140) initially served in the ACMF (5 February 1941 - 28 September 1942) with 14 Australian Coy 1 Division AASC, and was attached to 1st Ordnance Coy on 29 September 1942 when he enlisted in the AIF. Private/Craftsman Cranley served with Radiophysics Depot AEME, and was attached to 10 Radio Maintenance Section AEME on 2 August 1943 when he embarked with his Unit from Townsville for Thursday Island on board the Islander. On 28 April 1945, Craftsman Cranley embarked from Thursday Island for Townsville, and was attached to 3 Vehicle Park Workshop AEME at Discharge on 6 February 1946.
Ern was born in Sydney, New South Wales in 1921, eldest of six children of Anthony (Joe) Phillip Cranley (nee Scardigli; b1887 in Sydney, New South Wales) and his second wife Alice Jane Martin (b1896 in Sydney, New South Wales). Joe (a Widower and Barman) and Alice married in 1920 in Sydney, where they settled and raised their family and Joe worked as a Labourer. Joe had decided to change his surname from Scadigli to Cranborne, and all his children bear Cranley as their surname.
Ern was a Factory Worker at Stokes McGowan Sports Goods Factory in Sans Souci when he enlisted in the Army in 1941. Following his Discharge from the Army, in 1946 in Sydney he married Vera Ruth Irvine (b1924 at Jamberoo via Kiama). Ern and Vera settled in Sydney, where they raised their family and Ern worked as the Sports Goods Factory and as a Leather Worker. According to family anecdote, Ern rode a bicycle to work for many years, and also worked an early morning shift as an Iceman several mornings weekly. Ern and Vera divorced in the late 1970s - Vera remarried. Ern died in 2010.
